8 weeks before

Set the moving date
Give notice on the rental contract on time
Obtain quotes from moving companies
Set a budget

6 weeks before

Definitively book the moving company
Set up a forwarding order with the post office
Declutter: sell, give away, dispose of
Get packing material

4 weeks before

Get and label boxes
Report address changes (bank, insurers, subscriptions)
Apply for a no-parking zone (cities like Zurich)
Transfer electricity, internet and phone providers

2 weeks before

Start packing (rarely used rooms first)
Dispose of bulky and special waste
Disassemble furniture that won’t fit through doors
Organise or book the final cleaning

1 week before

Defrost the fridge and freezer
Pack valuables and documents separately
Prepare the "first-night box"
Finish packing the remaining rooms

Moving day

Check the no-parking signs, keep the space free
Read and photograph the meters
Check the flat is completely empty
Flat handover with protocol, handover of keys

After the move

Register with the new municipality (within 14 days)
Update SERAFE / radio-TV licence fee
Confirm the new address with all offices
Assemble furniture, recycle boxes
