Moving in Zurich: guide to all 12 districts

Zurich is divided into 12 districts, each with its own character – and its own moving challenges. Narrow alleys in the old town, lift-less old buildings in Kreis 4, spacious villa quarters on the Zürichberg. Knowing these differences makes planning easier. This guide sums up the essentials.

Old town & centre (Kreis 1): narrow alleys, little parking

Kreis 1 covers the historic old town with its narrow, partly car-free alleys. A move here requires precise planning: the truck often can’t park right at the door. A no-parking zone requested in advance is almost always necessary, and for higher floors a furniture lift pays off.

  • Request the no-parking zone early (min. 10 days before)
  • Plan a furniture lift for upper floors
  • Agree short carrying paths with the team

Kreis 4 & 5: old buildings, trendy quarters, stairwells

Kreis 4 (Aussersihl) and Kreis 5 (industrial quarter) are popular, densely built areas with many old buildings. Charming high ceilings often mean narrow, steep stairwells without a lift. Large furniture like sofas or wardrobes frequently won’t fit – here a furniture lift is worth gold.

Outer districts & Zürichberg: more space, different issues

In outer districts like Wollishofen, Höngg, Witikon or on the Zürichberg there is more space – driveways, forecourts and sometimes private parking make the move easier. On the other hand, distances are larger and some villa quarters are on slopes or have long access paths.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need a no-parking zone in Zurich?

Not always, but almost always in densely built districts (1, 4, 5). It secures a parking spot right in front of the house and shortens carrying paths. We are happy to apply for it for you.

When do I need a furniture lift in Zurich?

Especially in old buildings (often Kreis 4 and 5) with narrow stairwells and no lift. If large furniture won’t fit through the stairwell, the furniture lift transports it safely through the window.
