Labelling moving boxes properly – a system saves time

Well-labelled boxes are the secret to a smooth move. Investing a few minutes in a clear system while packing saves hours when unpacking – and nothing gets lost. Here’s how.

The colour and number system

Assign each room a colour (e.g. kitchen = red, bedroom = blue) and stick coloured labels on the boxes. Additionally number each box and keep a short content list. This way every helper instantly knows where the box belongs.

  • One colour per room
  • Number every box
  • Keep a short content list per box
  • Mark important boxes "open first"
  • Label on several sides

Frequently asked questions

What do you write on moving boxes?

The destination room, a number and briefly the contents. A colour system per room speeds it up further. Specially mark fragile and first-needed boxes.

Which boxes should I unpack first?

A "first-aid box" for the first night: bedding, toiletries, chargers, some dishes and clothes. Mark it clearly, load it last, unload it first.
